More memories of Lars
When I met Klaus in Borås, Sweden in 1995, where he had moved with mother as a young boy, he told of his youth and also how wild Lars was as a child. While mother was on a business trip around 1953, when Lars was 6, he said to Klaus, "Now when mom's gone to work trip, let's try together to find out where the man is on the phone."
Eventually Lars crushed that old desk phone with a hammer, into small pieces, but not found the talking "man". He did the same for her mother's radio. Lars crushed it broken into small pieces with a hammer without finding a speaking man. Too much curiosity sometimes leads to mindless acts, especially in children.
In addition to all that mischief, on the same day, Lars wore a fur coat of mother. And wearing the fur coat, he began to play as angry bear, carrying Klaus on his back. They played beside a mud pool with the consequence that Lars stumbled and they fall into the puddle on their stomach and the fur got wet and completely dirty. When mom arrived, Klaus ran into hide place, but Lars got more than just reproach from mom. I wasn't home at the time, but maybe I was then with Selma (?)
Lars did another valiant job, besides he had gotten mom to forest pond to help me, when I was drowned. He also saved Klaus' life. They were wading in the river and could not yet swim. Klaus noticed he was no longer able to reach the bottom and started shouting for help. Lars hurried to him, grabbed hold of him, and pulled him out of the deep water.
So the life-threatening situation came because mother was not there to shepherd her children.
I also remember the brave act of Lars rescuing a neighbor's little boy, alias Ilpo Metsälä, in Lohja in 1959 from the sure death. It was a winter evening and the street was slick and icy. I saw a neighbor's little boy lieing on the road.
The big truck was approaching him at high speed, and the driver would not have had time to brake. Lars saw the situation and quickly jumped on the boy, taking a tight grip on him and rolled around with him to the edge of the road. What a really dangerous situation and brave deed from Lars! Only a few of us would be willing to put his own life at risk for their neighbour sake!
Ilpo started crying and his mother came to the yard screaming, "Are you tormenting Ilpo again?" I shouted to her that Lars had saved Ilpo's life, taking Ilpo and bearing him in his lap away the road from a truck approaching. Then Mrs. fell silent. Family Metsälä had several children and Mrs. was a housewife.
Her husband was a ship captain, who very rarely came home. Therefore, the lady did not always have time to shepherd her wild sons, who were many. They had a large detached house, on the other side the street, just opposite our house.
I also remember the next incident from Lars in the summer of 1960. We were alone in the garden and for some reason he was furious against me, took a big stone, about the size of an adult man's fist, and threw it unexpectedly towards my forehead.
The big stone came so fast I couldn't dodge. I remember how it approached my forehead, stopping like a wall just before it hit me and fell in front of me to the ground. We both wondered about it. It didn't even touch my forehead. I'm sure that if it had been hit, then I would be injured. Thank you to my guardian angel and Adonai for that! HalleluYah!
Lars received an invitation to eternity on November 12, 2007, just after he turned 60. Father, mother, we other relatives, and his children Margit and Sari and their families, as well as his son Jari mourned for him. If he had been sober, he probably would be alive today.
According to a Swedish doctor's report, his death was caused by burst of his small intestine while he was drunken and sleeping at his friend. In report was also said Lars had used alcohol too long time and he did drink too strong alcohol. Alcohol had etched his small intestine to very thin. Ethylene alcohol is used as a thinner in paints and has a corrosive effect. It also has a corrosive effect on the intestine.
Dad told me Lars wanted to start driving Formula 1 when he was young, but dad wouldn't allow it because it would have been too expensive and Lars was too adventurous and fearless. His marriage broke down quite early when he started drinking too much and couldn't stop drinking. That is why, in the 1970s, he applied for a job from Lohja Oy. The firm did send him to work as a foreman in Baghdad, Iraq. There Lohja Oy had a big building project.
He hoped he could get rid of alcoholism there, because drinking alcoholic beverages in Iraq was forbidden. So he worked there for 2 years sober. Lars was educated a car mechanic, so he was out of his profession while working as a foreman in Iraq. After returning to Finland, he slipped into the worst drunken spiral again. He was punished because of drunk driving.
He was sentenced to work at the Seutula Airport construction site, an open prison. During that time he was almost refreshed. I went with dad to see him there. He was ashamed of being in open captivity. While visiting with my father to meet Klaus in Borås in July 2007, I phoned from there to Lars in Gothenburg, where he lived and had worked at the Volvo PV (person) car factory from 1977 to 2006.
For the last few years of his life, he worked on a Volvo personal car final inspection. Gothenburg is located very near of Borås, but he couldn't leave his home (then in July 2007) because he was drunk. Since he had had a severe stroke, I also asked if he would promise to read John's gospel as cartoon edition if I'll sent it him per mail(?)
Before that, he wasn't willing to listen to anything about religion, but then he agreed and I sent him a booklet right away. He was alive about 5 months after that. I hope he really did read through it and believed in it's message of salvation! Salvation is a gift that cannot be earned in any way. If we do not take it as a gift through faith, we cannot be saved!
I will to talk more of him in this book at some later when I lived in Gothenburg. Let us never forget brothers and sisters!
